On this day, Jozef Tiso was elected the first president of the newly-created Slovak Republic. Tiso, a former catholic priest, would go on to facilitate the murder and deportations of thousands of Slovakian Jews.
Tiso was already the prime minister of the autonomous Slovakia, and upon the German invasion, he was elected the president.
Throughout his time as president, ending in 4 April 1945 and his subsequent execution, Jozef Tiso would collaborate with the Nazi’s plans of victimisation and persecution of the Jewish people. His crimes included deporting many Slovak Jews to extermination and concentration camps in Germany and German-occupied Poland, along with encouraging the murders of Jews within Slovakia.
