Last British troops evacuated from Dunkirk, French troops continue to fight

The Dunkirk evacuations were drawing to a close on this day. With the Germans advanced, and pushing the Allied troops back further, ships continued to load up troops for the journey home.

Today, 26,256 troops were evacuated, including the last remaining British soldiers. There still remained French troops defending the beach and the town, preventing the Germans were entering the Dunkirk properly.

As the evening arrived, there remained ships able to evacuate more troops, with some troops still boarding. Many French soldiers, however, were without orders and either continued fighting or escaped the area.
