First British soldier killed in war

On this day, the first British solider to die during the war lost his life. He would be the first of an eventual total of 384,000 British soldiers who would die.

The solider was 27 year old Corporal Thomas Priday, of the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Corporal Priday’s unit had been sent to the Saar Front under French command. Corporal Priday was on night patrol when his group became lost. Whilst trying to find they way, the group strayed into a minefield and Corporal Priday stepped onto a French mine, killing him instantly.

Corporal Priday died on the 100th day of the war.

Coporal Priday was buried with full military honours at Luttange Communal Cemetery.
