Dutch and Belgian monarchs offer to mediate peace between nations

On this day, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and King Leopold III of the Belgians offered to mediate in peace negotiations between Germany and Britain and France.

Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany, would later reject the offer. He said that future negotiations could be opened, but not at present. He was quoted as saying that a recent speech by Winston Churchill convinced him that peace with Britain was impossible. Germany has also stated that any interest in peace negotiations would appear as a sign of weakness.

Germany at present cannot undertake a positive step to realise the Sovereigns’ peace plans because it would give the impression that she was prepared to capitulate.
