South African Prime Minister resigns, new PM declares war on Germany

South Africa, as part of the British Commonwealth, has declared war on Germany.

The decision came after Germany’s invasion of Poland. The South African government, led by Prime Minister Barry Hertzog, was initially divided over joining the conflict. However, public pressure and allegiance to Britain led to the Prime Minister’s stance of neutrality being challenge. Unable to convince the Governor-General of the need to call new elections, the Prime Minister resigned. He is replaced by Jan Christiaan Smuts. Under his leadership, South Africa declared war on Germany. A realignment will surely follow, with the nation becoming more actively involved in the war effort as part of the Allied forces.
