Warsaw surrenders to Germans

The Polish city Warsaw today surrendered to the Germans, ending the long and bloody Siege of Warsaw. The Polish commander was General Walerian Czuma.

The siege, which began with bombing on 1 September and land fighting on 8 September, ended with surrender by the Polish forces. 140,000 Polish troops left the city and were immediately captured by the Germans.

It is estimated 18,000 Polish civilians were killed during the siege, along with 10% of the buildings destroyed and a further 40% heavily damaged.
