Modlin Fortress, one of the last holdouts of Polish forces during the invasion, today surrendered to German forces.
The fortress was garrisoned with 24,000 Polish troops and was under the command of General Wiktor Thommée. The fortress was supported by the armoured train Śmierć (Polish for ‘death’), and an anti-aircraft battery credited with destroying more Luftwaffe planes than any other battery in Poland.
